Deeper than bones

Which bands you feel like you absolutely have to see play live before you die (or they break up)?
I would really love to see a lot of the great 80's and 90's rock bands play in person before they get really old and start sucking. Incubus is a must see for me, along with Foo Fighters and some other smaller bands. And then I really want to see Chris Brown live. That would be epic.

How did you decide what you wanted to do after high school (which college you wanted to attend, your major, not going to college, your job, etc)?
I took a few visits to Ball State and fell in love with it. And my major was decided after I was on the paper for 3 years. Writing is my thang, yo.

Why do people make such a big deal when a survey has a question with more than one part?
Because people don't like to write drawn-out answers?

Is there any part of your life that your friends don't really know about?
I kept my online gaming addiction a pretty big secret for most of 8th grade, but otherwise I'm pretty much an open book.

What products do you use to style your hair?
Bedhead wax almost every day, and occasionally I gel it
Have you ever used StumbleUpon? How do you feel about it?
The hell is that.

Do you feel like you need a "reason" to get high/drunk (party, etc) or do you just do it whenever?
Yeah. I'm not going to do that stuff alone or anything. Loser much.

How do you feel about hipsters?
I'm dating one, so I think I like them. :P

Frank Zappa or Flight of the Conchords?
That's tough. Flight of the Conchords has some pretty funny yet awesome music, while Frank Zappa is one of the best guitarists of all time. But I'm more of a modern music kinda person, so FotC it is.

Has anyone you dated ever had such a common physical feature/possession that made you feel like you saw them everywhere (a certain hat, a car, hairstyle, etc)?
If I ever see curly brown hair, I always perk up to see if its Haley. Usually isn't at Ball State, which is disappointing.

Are there any museums or anything that you want to visit?
I'd like to go back to the ones in Chicago. I didn't get to see them all the last time I was there and the ones that I did actually get to see were really cool.

How do you usually listen to music (shuffle, playlist, by album, etc)?
I listen off my laptop. My Ipod gets used occasionally.

Do you watch Ace of Cakes? Who's your favorite?
Huh?

Where did/are you go/going for beach week?
Again, huh?

What about those questions on surveys that aren't really questions but just statements, how do you feel about those?
I think they suck.

What's the name of the closest grocery store? Is that where you shop?
In Muncie? Either Kroger or Wal Mart. And I guess so

How much did each of your piercings/tattoos cost?
I'm a hole free boy!

Is driving school required for all ages in your state/province/whateverfuckcanda:P ?
Yep Yep

What would you do if you became a ghost after you died?
Creep on people as they sleep or something, a la Edward Cullen.

My Top-5 Mock Draft

With the combine starting this week, it's time to finally dive in to the NFL draft. I'll start of by doing a full mock draft, first doing a detailed report on my top 5 picks. This is more about what I think the teams SHOULD do, rather than what they will do. Most of the teams in the with the first 10 picks are run by complete morons (see: Davis, Al), so hopefully they'll see my post between now and April to realize what they should do.

#1-St. Louis Rams- QB Jimmy Clausen

I do believe that Ndomukong Suh is the best player in the draft, but is he the best player for the Rams? I don't think so. First, they have absolutely nothing at quarterback. Marc Bulger sucks, Kyle Boller sucks, and Keith Null is so bad that he handed me a fantasy win by throwing five interceptions against the Titans. They're also picking in the top 2 picks for the 3rd straight here. That's beyond awful, and can only mean that the entire franchise is in disarray and needs a big change. Safe picks like Chris Long and Jason Smith don't offer that, but Jimmy Clausen does. Many people doubt his ability, but I truly believe that Clausen will be a great QB in this league. He has a great arm, is pin-point accurate, possesses good pocket awareness, and is a true leader. He's also worked in a NFL offense under Fatass Weis, making it an easy transition for him to the NFL. Sam Bradford could also be the pick here, but I'm really unsure whether or not his shoulder is going to be a problem in the NFL. Nobody wants to take damaged goods with the first overall pick, so Clausen becomes the best option.

#2-Detroit Lions- DT Ndomukong Suh

The Lions have an easy decision here. If Suh is available, you take him. If not, you take Gerald McCoy. It's that simple. Their defense might as well have been invisible last year, so adding Suh would be the first step to turning the team into a competitor. Suh is dominant at the point of attack, and can occasionally toss lineman around like rag dolls. He's not an elite pass rusher like McCoy, but he can still cause huge disruptions in the running game and control the line of scrimmage. He would be a perfect fit with the Lions. There's also an option for Detroit to take Russel Okung with this pick. Jeff Backus is terrible, no matter what their front office says, and they need somebody at LT who can protect Matt Stafford and keep him from getting hurt. But there might be a chance that Charles Brown falls to them in round 2, so they will probably gamble on that chance and take Suh with this pick.

#3-Tampa Bay Buccaneers- DT Gerald McCoy

Poor Bucs. They won a meaningless game against the Saints at the end of the season and took themselves out of the #2 pick, leaving them only to pray that the Rams take a QB. Otherwise, they'll only be able to watch as 2 of the best DT prospects in a long time come off the board before they pick. And the best part? Defensive tackle is the team's No. 1 need. Ooooooops. There's a few rumors that they could swap picks with the Rams, but there's no way it happens. If they're left without a DT to pick, then they'll probably go with Eric Berry or trade back and select Brian Price.

#4-Washington Redskins- OT Russell Okung

For some reason, people seem to think that Jason Campbell sucks. The problem is that they've probably never even watched a Redskins game. The problem is that Campbell has pressure in his face almost as soon as he hikes the ball. Somehow he still managed to play decently, which raises the question of how he would play with some actual protection. Russell Okung had an incredible year in 2009, recording only 2 pressures. That's insane. He would be an immediate upgrade to the Redskins O-Line and would give Campbell some actual time to make reads and throws.

#5-Kansas City Chiefs- Trade back or S Eric Berry

In this situation, I could see this pick being traded. Kansas City has a lot of needs, but there's no real elite prospects left that could warrant being picked at #5 by them. If they managed to swing a trade for somebody looking to select Sam Bradford, a la the Jets and Mark Sanchez in 2009, they could probably get a few more picks and still get a great player. My bet is that the Broncos decide that Kyle Orton is not a franchise QB and trade up to get Bradford, giving the Chiefs the 11th pick as well as their 2nd and 4th round picks. The Chiefs would then have their take of either Rolando McClain, Dez Bryant, and Bryan Bulaga. However, if they do get stuck with the 5th pick, they'll likely take Eric Berry. He would give them an instant playmaker on defense which they so desperately need.

More to come in the next few days, but tell me what you think in the comments.

Track team falls short at Bowling Green 1/19/10

Preview of the Match:

On paper, the Ball State University women’s track and field team can appear top heavy.

Entering Saturday’s meet at Bowling Green State University, it returns some talented upperclassmen, such as All-Mid-American Conference honorees Ali Bishel, Brittany Ade and Katie Johnson.

But on the other side of the spectrum, there are 17 freshman out of the 41 athletes on the roster, making it a youth-driven team.

Coach Randy Heisler said that fact does not intimidate him.

“I feel really good about the freshman class,” Heisler said. “They all have a really good attitude, they work hard and I think they’ll do well from here on out.”

Junior Ra’Jae Marable, a 60-meter hurdles champion in the 2008 MAC Indoor Championships, agrees with her coach.

“I think the freshmen might feel a little bit of pressure to go out and do well,” Marable said. “But I think they’re also eager to just go out and show what they’re capable of.”

Heisler said the young additions to an already accomplished group of returning athletes should help the team vie for a conference championship. The members of the team are setting their goals just as high for the season.

For Marable, that means improving on any previous success.

“I just hope to get off to a really good start, hopefully getting no new injuries along the way, and repeating everything I accomplished in the past few years,” she said.

Sophomore distance runner Christine Talhelm said the whole team expects to improve both in their personal and team records.

“Individually, I want to place in conference in indoor and outdoor in the 800 [meters], and to improve on my times from last year,” Talhelm said. “And obviously, the whole team wants to win the MAC.”

Even though a first meet could always cause some nervousness in any athlete, Talhelm doesn’t think that will be a problem with the team, including the freshmen, come this Saturday.

“Everyone should just be excited to go out and make their performance count,” Talhelm said. “And to show that they’ll be able to contribute to a winning team.”

Ball State will be competing on Saturday against five other MAC schools in Bowling Green, Ohio University, Eastern Michigan University, Miami University and the University of Toledo. The non-conference schools participating will be the University of Cincinnati, Oakland University and IPFW.

Gamer:

The Ball State University women's track team came into Saturday's meet at Bowling Green State University with high hopes. But it left with a mediocre result, finishing in sixth place out of a 10-team field and fifth out of the six Mid-American Conference teams.

Junior Thekla Lorenz had the sole event victory of the day for Ball State, winning the long jump with a 5.7-meter leap. Ra'Jae Marable also had an impressive performance, posting a third place finish in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.82 seconds.

In the end, it wasn't enough to overcome strong performances from MAC rivals Central Michigan University and Miami University. The teams finished first and third with scores of 135.5 and 115.5, respectively. Ball State ended the day with a score of 45.

Coach Randy Heisler was unavailable for comment.

The team's season continues next weekend at the Gladstine Invitational in Bloomington, which will be held Friday and Saturday.

Welcome to the Blog!

I'll keep it short and simple. My name is Andrew Mishler and I'm a freshman at Ball State University. I'll mainly be using this to organize all of the articles I write for the University newspaper, the Ball State Daily News. Right now I'm writing stuff for the track team, and later on in the semester I'll be doing work for the men's golf team. I'll also be writing some other thoughts on sports and life in general, so check back every so often for new updates. Thanks for reading!
